Supporting 2014 Worldwide Pressure Ulcer Prevention Day

A pressure ulcer, also known as “bedsore”, is a wound developed when something rubs or presses against an area of skin constantly and reduces blood flow to the area. It is likely to occur on the sacral, elbow, heel, ankle areas and most commonly found on patients who use a wheelchair, stay in bed for a long time, or with diabetes and other diseases that affect blood flow. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 2.5 million people in the United States suffer from pressure ulcers every year that are not only painful and require months to heal but also may lead to amputation, organ failure and even death (about 60,000 people worldwide each year).

As for medical systems, pressure ulcers remain a heavy burden in cost – the U.S. national cost of pressure ulcer treatment is $9.1 – $11.6 billion, the cost of individual patient care ranges from $20,900 to $151,700 per pressure ulcer and not to mention the higher costs in terms of human suffering. Despite advancement in technologies, the number of hospitalizations for pressure ulcers reported to Medicare increased 80% despite only 15% more patients from 1993 to 2006.

Pressure ulcers are a common clinical problem around the world causing much pain and distress.  Often they receive inadequate attention. Most people have known a family member, a friend or an animal friend who has suffered from PU. Devon Medical Products, a medical device manufacturer, places patient care at the center of our attention and thrives in developing Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) products that are simple, versatile and affordable. We support the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) on November 20th 2014, the Worldwide Pressure Ulcer Prevention Day to raise visibility for, spread the knowledge of pressure ulcers and how they can be prevented.
